Eastern Province Governor Rohitha Bogollagama was the Chief Guest at the 31st anniversary commemoration of the assassination of Buddhist Bhikkhus at Aranthalawa, held on 2 June.
In 1987, the LTTE assassinated 31 Buddhist Bhikkhus and 3 civilian pilgrims on the Ampara - Mahaoya Road at Aranthalawa.
Speaking at the commemorative event, Governor Bogollagama pointed out that while the terrorism of the LTTE did not discriminate between religions or races, the Aranthalawa attack was the worst incident to directly target Buddhists, and strongly condemned the attack.
Former Minister P. Dayarathne, Parliamentarian Wimalaweera Dissanayaka, the GA of Ampara, Senior DIG Eastern Province, and a large number of Buddhist monks and devotees participated in this event.
