Construction of Rs. 8.4 b housing program to start tomorrow

A Cabinet-approved Rs. 8.4 billion housing program for the construction of 14,022 houses in three phases under the National Housing Development Program is set to begin tomorrow.

According to a statement issued by the Housing Facilities Ministry yesterday, the first phase of the project will be launched on an electoral division level and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will lay the foundation stone in Waruwewa, Giribawa, Kurunegala tomorrow to kick-start the project.

The families benefitting from the project include those living in houses with roofing made out of coconut or palmyrah branches, sheet metal, and planks, families of children with disabilities and patients suffering from chronic illnesses, and poverty-stricken families with children who have received university admission. According to State Minister of Housing Indika Anuruddha, a sum of Rs. 600,000 will be awarded per house and construction will be carried out under the supervision of the National Housing Development Authority.
