Media industry professional Krishantha Cooray has resigned as Chairman of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd., on Wednesday.

In his letter to the Public Trustee, Cooray said: “As a career media industry professional, I have always harboured a special veneration for the history of ‘Lake House’ and its unique role in the public square. I had the unique privilege of completing my tenure without once being subjected to editorial interference or direction from either His Excellency the President or any Cabinet Minister. In turn, the board and I too respected the independence of our editors and ensured that they were allowed to direct our newspapers as they deemed fit in their professional discretion.” “I remain hopeful that my successor and the incoming management team will enjoy the same unprecedented privilege and build on this unprecedented culture of respect for editorial independence at a State media organisation, cognisant of the role of a free press in a healthy democracy,” Cooray added in his resignation letter.
