Court imposes overseas travel ban on former IGP

An overseas travel ban was imposed on former IGP Deshabandu Thennakoon by the Matara Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, following a request made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The request was made after CID officers had searched Thennakoon’s residence and failed to locate him.

Last Friday, the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered the arrest of the former IGP and seven other officers of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) over a shooting incident that took place in front of a hotel in the Pelena area of Weligama, Matara, on 31 December 2023. A CCD team had travelled to the area to arrest a suspect without informing the area Police in Weligama. Policemen had opened fire at the CCD due to a mistaken identity, and one of the Police Sergeants was killed in the shooting.

The deployment of the CCD team was found to be illegal and, therefore, the Court ordered the arrest of the former IGP and seven others.
