The Court of Appeal yesterday heard the application filed by Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) and several other organisations and individuals (totalling 30 petitioners) seeking writs in the nature of certiorari and prohibition to prevent the Minister of Agriculture from proceeding with his proposal to export 100,000 Toque Macaque monkeys endemic to Sri Lanka to China.
The Court issued notice on the Minister of Agriculture and the Cabinet of Ministers, the Director General of DWC and others. The case will be taken up on 19 May.
The Petitioners were represented by Sanjeeva Jayawardene, President’s Counsel, and Attorneys-at-law, Prashanthi Mahindaratne, Dilumi De Alwis, Lakmini Warusawithana and Rukshan Senadheera.
