Thousands of people arrested charged under Quarantine Ordinance and

released, will have to face court later

Those who violate curfew regulation will have to face court on charges of violating the Quarantine Act, Police said yesterday.

Police Spokesman SP Jaliya Senarathna told the Daily FT that the thousands of people who have been arrested are usually released after being charged under the Quarantine Ordinance and will be summoned to court eventually.

According to Senarathna, more than 20,000 persons have been arrested by the police for violating curfew regulations since 20 March. “Those who are arrested are charged under the Quarantine and Prevention of Disease Act and later released, they will have to face court when they receive summons once the system begins to function normally again,” he said.

The Sri Lanka Police has continued its efforts to ensure curfew regulations are adhered to and social distancing is maintained. Since curfew was imposed, the Police has arrested 28,441 persons for violating curfew regulations and confiscated 7,194 vehicles.
