Customs nabs five suspects with 6 kg gold worth over Rs. 123 m at BIA

Sri Lanka Customs yesterday arrested five suspects who attempted to smuggle 6 kg of gold biscuits and jewellery worth over Rs. 123 million into the country through Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). 

The suspects, consisting of four women and a man, arrived in Colombo from Dubai on separate flights. 

According to authorities, three of the apprehended individuals, along with the male suspect, touched down in Sri Lanka at around 1.10 a.m. yesterday, arriving on a FlyDubai flight from Dubai. The remaining female suspect landed at BIA at around 5.25 a.m. aboard a SriLankan Airlines flight. 

The concealed contraband was discovered both on their persons and within their hand luggage, highlighting the sophisticated methods employed by smugglers. 

All of the detained individuals are residents of the Colombo area, engaged in various businesses and frequent international travel, as per Sri Lanka Customs sources. 

The Narcotics Control Unit of Sri Lanka Customs has launched further investigations into this significant smuggling attempt.
