The Government yesterday said slight delays are to be expected with the one million doses of COVID-19 vaccines ordered from India due to the fire that occurred at the Serum Institute of India in January.
Addressing a question on vaccine supply delays, Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said: “We have received 1.26 million vaccine doses thus far. Sri Lanka is also to receive one million doses from the doses we plan to purchase. There is a small delay with the fire that occurred in the Serum Institute of India. However, they have stated that they will fulfil our purchase order and make arrangements to provide these doses.”
He explained that there are a few more weeks until vaccinated persons are to receive the second dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and the Government believes they will receive the necessary doses by then.
As of yesterday, 743,775 persons in the country had received the COVID-19 vaccine. This includes 6,713 persons who were administered the vaccine yesterday and 7,500 persons who received the vaccine on Monday.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, 146,327 persons were vaccinated during the week following 29 January. Between 5 February and 11 February, 31,760 persons were vaccinated and 55,385 persons were vaccinated the following week.
A total of 159,997 persons received the vaccine between 19 February and 25 February and 257,522 persons received the vaccine between 26 February and 4 March.
On 5 March, 48,530 persons were vaccinated, on 6 March, 24,757 persons were vaccinated and on 7 March, 5,284 persons were vaccinated.
