Dozens injured and hospitalised after Police attack NPP protest

Against the postponement of elections protest organised by the National People’s Power yesterday at the Colombo and the police fired tear gas and water cannons near the Union Place. The protest was attended by a large number of people, including the leader of the National People’s Power Anura Kumara Dissanayake - Pix by Ruwan Walpola and Shehan Gunasekara

 

 


Dozens of persons injured during yesterday’s protest staged by the National People’s Power (NPP) were brought to the National Hospital in Colombo for treatment.

Hospital sources confirmed that those injured during the protest were brought for treatment after tear gas and water cannons were fired in attempts to disperse the protesters.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the group of protesters at Ibbanwala Junction near Town Hall in Colombo during the demonstration organised by the NPP demanding the conduct of Local Government elections without delay.

NPP took to the streets today amidst two court orders being issued by both the Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court against the protest.
