Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Professor G.L. Peiris says MPs belonging to his faction will not accept any Ministerial position or otherwise in any all-party Government to be formed under the current executive system.
“We must also stress that expanding the Cabinet in the current juncture is not acceptable,” he added.
Peiris made these comments at a press briefing held today in Colombo along with SLPP MP Dullas Alahapperuma and others in their faction. The briefing had been called following the group’s meeting with President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday on the possibility of forming an all-party Government.
According to Peiris, the SLPP group expressed their support for any program that would benefit the country. “We expressed our view of the need for all parties to arrive at a consensus on a program prior to its implementation for the benefit of the country,” Peiris said. “We will extend our fullest support to this end,” he added.
Also expressing his views, Alahapperuma called on the President and Prime Minister to be sensitive when dealing with the people who are suffering and under severe pressure. “This pressure cannot be made to disappear through repression,” he said.
