  • Additions made to Code of Conduct of candidates and media guidelines
  • Changes aimed at deterring unrest and violence among groups during poll period groups

The Election Commission has amended both the Code of Conduct for contesting candidates, as well as media guidelines to be followed during the poll, to deter acts of violence during the campaign period.

The additional directives, which were published in the Gazette last week, call on contesting candidates, their supporters, and officials of political parties to refrain from expressing opinions during election campaigning praising acts of violence, violation of election laws, illegal activities, and also which are made in a way that causes unrest and violence among social groups.

The same directive has been given to all media institutions, to take action to prevent the publication of statements, speeches, or audio clips made by politicians or others during election time, appreciating acts of violence, violation of election laws, or illegal activities, or which are made in a way that causes unrest and violence among social groups.

The Media Guidelines and the Code of Conduct have been amended under the powers vested in it under Election Commission under Article 104 B (5) (a) of the Constitution.
