The Attorney General’s Department informed the Supreme Court yesterday that it has issued instructions to the Police to end investigations against Minister Harin Fernando, whose statement was recorded regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attack.
Fernando had filed a fundamental rights petition seeking an order to prevent his arrest in connection with the case.
Deputy Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris, representing the Attorney General, informed the court of the latest development when the petition was taken up before the court yesterday.
During today’s court proceedings, the Deputy Solicitor General conveyed to the court that, following a review of the investigation files conducted by the Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) concerning the incident, the Attorney General on 20 June had instructed them to conclude the investigation. The petition was taken up before a bench consisting of Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Preethi Padman Surasena, and Janak de Silva. However, in order to determine whether the petition will proceed further, the court has also scheduled another hearing for 18 September.
