Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake
The Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake on Monday announced that it is fully prepared to conduct the Local Government polls as soon as the Supreme Court delivers its rulings on several related cases to the Speaker of the Parliament.
Addressing the media, he addressed frequent public queries regarding the timing of the long-delayed LG polls.
Ratnayake clarified that while the Commission stands ready to proceed, it is awaiting the Supreme Court’s decisions, which are yet to be officially communicated to Parliament.
He also provided an update on the Provincial Council elections, stating that they will be held once necessary amendments to the Provincial Council Election Act are passed by Parliament.
“There are certain legal revisions required before we can move forward, but once Parliament approves them the Election Commission is prepared to conduct the elections,” he affirmed.
Addressing concerns over funding, Ratnayake confirmed that the Government has allocated the necessary funds for the Local Government polls, ensuring that financial constraints will not be a barrier once legal hurdles are cleared.
