Election Commission to review Govt.’s development projects ahead of LG polls

The Election Commission, through a directive has instructed the Government to submit details of all ongoing development projects for review to ensure compliance with election laws.

As per the directive, Ministries and State Departments must disclose relevant projects, allowing the Commission to assess their impact during the election period. If any projects are deemed to have the potential to influence the election, the Government will be advised to postpone them till post-elections.

At the most recent Cabinet meeting held on 17 March, the Government announced increased benefits under the ‘Aswesuma’ welfare program and fertiliser allowances for the Yala cultivation season. These measures coming to effect from April ahead of the Local Government polls expected in May, raise concerns over such initiatives.

Traditionally, Cabinet decisions made during these election times are subject to Election Commission review, ensuring fair play in the electoral process.

The Commission provides guidelines on whether these projects can proceed or should be deferred to avoid undue influence on voters.
