Eran against death penalty

State Minister for Finance Eran Wickremaratne yesterday said he was “emphatically” against lifting the moratorium on the death penalty. 

The foremost reason for this opposition being “the moral repugnance of an individual having the power to take the life of another”. 

“The alarming margin for error in the current justice system creates the possibility of the innocent and disempowered in our society being victimised, as opposed to the powerful and the wealthy”, Wickremaratne noted.
