On Sunday, 22 September, a statue of the Maitreya Buddha (Buddha of the Coming) was unveiled in the city of Lagan in the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia. The statue, with the height of 12.5 meters and weight of 30 tons, is now officially the largest Buddha statue in Europe.
According to the TASS News Agency, the unveiling and consecration ceremony was attended by more than 2,000 residents of the Republic of Kalmykia and monks from Lagansky and Central Khuruls (temples).
The Republic of Kalmykia is also known for having The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni – the largest Buddhist temple in Russia and Europe – located there after its official opening in the city of Elista in 2005.
