Family of arrested SL student requests Govt. non-interference

The family of the Sri Lankan national arrested in Australia on allegations of terrorism, has requested the Sri Lankan Government not to intervene in the matter.

Sources close to the family told the Daily FT that the family of Kamer Nizamdeen have requested that the Government not interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings, asserting that they had faith in the independence of the Australian judicial system. 

“I’m sure he will be able to prove his innocence as the Australian judiciary is renowned for functioning in an independent and fair manner. The family has made it very clear that Sri Lankan Government intervention is not necessary,” sources said. 

Nizamdeen (25) was arrested in his office at the campus of the University of New South Wales last Thursday by authorities.

He was arrested after a colleague in the University’s IT business team found a notebook allegedly containing details of a list names of ‘significant’ places and individuals. Nizamdeen was well-integrated into the university where he studied, worked and mentored students.

He had developed a working relationship with the New South Wales police, with whom in 2016, along with the NSW Government, he had collaborated with to create an app to help foreign students protect themselves from fraud upon reaching Australia.  Nizamdeen was the star of the promotional material regarding the project and was named the University of New South Wales Hero of the Week. Currently, being held in police custody, Nizamdeen is to appear before courts on 24 October.
