First burial in Colombo and Kandy of COVID victims

This week saw the first ever burial of Muslim citizen succumbing to COVID-19 at the Maligawatte burial grounds whilst Kandy saw it yesterday. 

This is after the Government earlier this month permitted burial or cremation of COVID-19 remains at any cemetery.

Previously burials for COVID remains took place in Oddamavadi, Batticaloa, 300 kilometres away from Colombo. 

Prior to March last year, the method of disposal for COVID-19 remains approved in Sri Lanka (by way of cremation) came under heavy criticism.
