Five COVID-19 deaths bring death toll to 489

Health authorities yesterday confirmed five COVID-19 deaths, which brings the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 489.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, a 78-year-old individual from Giriulla tested positive for COVID-19 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo and was transferred to the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Medical Faculty Hospital. However, she died of COVID pneumonia and multi-organ dysfunction yesterday.The previous day, a 70-year-old individual from Boralesgamuwa died of trauma of blood poisoning, COVID pneumonia, acute kidney damage and cancer while receiving treatment at the Colombo East Base Hospital.

On 2 March, an individual from Kolonnawa died of heart disease, COVID pneumonia and acute kidney damage at a private hospital in Colombo. The individual was 72 years old.

Health authorities state that a 62-year-old individual from Mattakkuliya tested positive for COVID-19 at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka and was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital. On 1 March she died of COVID-19 and respiratory failure.

On 22 February, an individual from Ussapitiya died while receiving treatment at the Kandy General Hospital, where she was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Kegalle Base Hospital. The cause of death was cited as blood poisoning and COVID pneumonia. The individual was 53 years old.
