Five COVID-19 deaths bring fatalities to 525

The country’s COVID-19 death toll yesterday rose to 525 with health authorities confirming five COVID-19 deaths.

According to the Department of Government Information, a 73-year-old individual from Polgasowita tested positive for COVID-19 at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital and was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital. However, he died of heart disease, acute kidney disease, COVID pneumonia, and acute diabetes yesterday.

On Thursday, a 75-year-old individual from Moratuwa died at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, where he was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital. The cause of death is cited as blood poisoning, COVID-19, and acute kidney infection.

An individual from Wattala tested positive for COVID-19 at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital and was transferred to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, where she died of blood poisoning, multi-organ dysfunction, and COVID pneumonia on Thursday. The individual was 72 years old.

A 72-year-old from Akkaraipattu also died on Thursday. According to the Department of Government Information, the individual tested positive for COVID-19 at the Akkaraipattu Base Hospital and was first transferred to the Colombo East Base Hospital and then the National Institute of Infectious Disease. The cause of death is cited as trauma of blood poisoning, a respiratory tract infection, COVID pneumonia, and acute kidney infection.

On 10 March, an individual from Ragama Walpola died of COVID pneumonia and trauma of blood poisoning while receiving treatment at the Homagama Base Hospital, where he was transferred from the National Hospital of Sri Lanka after testing positive for COVID-19. The individual was 73 years old.
