Floods show signs of receding, affected reduced to 71,049 people

Floods and heavy rains caused by adverse weather has affected 71,049 individuals and 21,107 families, with damage to 43 houses and partial damage to 1,258 houses, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated in the situation report released yesterday.

According to the report, 24 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) were also damaged by adverse weather, and 62 temporary shelters have been set up in the country so far. Of these, 15 are in the Nuwara Eliya District and 12 are in the Badulla District. The temporary shelters currently accommodate 6,718 people and 1,944 families.

While no deaths have been reported, one injury has been reported from the Batticaloa District. One person from Ampara District and another from Kalutara District are also reported to be missing.

Weather conditions are expected to improve in the coming days, however, and the weather forecast for today points to mainly fair weather in most parts of the country. However, showers or thundershowers may occur in several places in Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces as well as in Galle and Matara Districts after 2.00 p.m.

Showers and thundershowers may also occur in coastal areas, extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. There may also be strong gusty winds of 70 to 80 km/h and very rough seas are to be expected.
