Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Prof. G.L. Peiris has accused the Government of turning Sri Lanka into a military camp and unleashing repression on the people as never seen before. “A 64-year-old law is being used to oppress the people,” he said adding that the accusations have been levelled against Sri Lanka at the 51st session of the UNHRC as a result of this.
Peiris made these comments during a press conference held by the Nidahas Jathika Sabawa.
Peiris said that all these acts of repression are being carried out to silence the people and also said that the Government is trying to intimidate officials who reveal information about malnutrition, and the shortage of food and medicine in the country as well.
Peiris also pointed out it will be impossible to attract tourists if designated high-security zones are established similar to military bases in the country. “The Government’s decision to establish high-security zones violates the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution,” he added.
The MP assured he along with others in the opposition will stand for the people against this program carried out by the government and will work against it.
