  • Highlights need for Presidential poll to go ahead as planned
  • Claims divisions within Govt. are worsening the suffering of people

Freedom People’s Congress (FPC) Executive Council Member Prof. G.L. Peiris addressing a press conference yesterday accused President Ranil Wickremesinghe of plotting to delay the Presidential election.

“During his address in the Parliament recently, the President clearly indicated a devious plan is being hatched aimed at postponing the elections,” he said. “Contrary to the assertions made by Government Ministers and MPs, the Presidential election will not take place before the planned date,” he added.

The MP however highlighted the need for the Presidential election to go ahead as scheduled. The MP said the numerous divisions within the Government are only further exacerbating the sufferings and difficulties faced by the country’s people.

Peiris said President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Head of the Cabinet should advocate for unity among the Cabinet Ministers. He further noted that the country’s agriculture sector has suffered significant damage due to internal conflicts among Government ministers.

“To actualise the vision of achieving a green economy by 2048, as articulated by the President, it is imperative to address the prevailing challenges faced by the people,” he said.

Commenting on the execution of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, Peiris stressed the need to hold Local Government elections prior to its implementation. Peiris also pointed out that the loss of trust in the healthcare sector has led to a significant increase in apprehension among patients.

Peiris remarked that the poverty rate in the country has doubled, and he criticised the current Government for openly disregarding the rule of law. He stated that they would function as the opposition to thwart the Government’s efforts to curtail labour rights.
