Former presidential aide Gamini Senarath was appointed as Secretary to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

Senarath served as the Additional Secretary and Chief of Staff of Mahinda Rajapaksa from 2005 to 2015. When Rajapaksa was appointed Prime Minister in 2004, he served as the Additional Secretary.

Gamini Senarath joined the Sri Lanka Administrative Service in 1984 after completing his Bachelors’ degree at the University of Kelaniya. He has served as an Assistant Divisional Secretary first and then as Controller of Immigration and Emigration and Commissioner of Motor Traffic. In addition, he has been the Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Litro Gas Company and People’s Bank.

He is also a Post Graduate in Computer Technology from the University of Colombo.

Senarath and two others were accused in the misappropriation of Rs. 500 million public funds belonging to the Litro Gas Company during the previous Rajapaksa Government.

However, in August this year the Special High Court Trial-at-Bar acquitted and released Gamini Senarath.
