Gangaramaya Chief Incumbent Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera passes away

The Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera also known as Podi Hamuduruwo passed away yesterday.

Ven. Gnanissara Thera was 81 years old at the time of his demise. 

Born on 13 December 1943, Podi Hamuduruwo has dedicated his life to the practice and propagation of Buddhist principles, guided by a profound commitment to compassion, equality and service to humanity.

His visionary leadership has transformed Gangaramaya Temple into a dynamic centre of spiritual growth, education and community empowerment. Through his guidance, the temple has spearheaded various initiatives, including vocational training programs, educational workshops and humanitarian projects, aimed at improving the lives of people from all walks of life.

In 2003, Ven. Gnanissara Thera was appointed by the Malwatta chapter as the Sanghanayaka of the Western Province in Sri Lanka.

He was also the Sanghanayaka of the Sri Lankan Buddhist temples in the United States but renounced that position later.

According to the funeral committee, the final rites of the Thero will be held under State patronage on Monday 5 August at the grounds adjoining the temple.
