Gayantha Karunathilaka appointed Chief Opposition Whip

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Galle district MP Gayantha Karunathilaka has been named the Chief Opposition Whip, following a meeting of the SJB Parliamentary group held yesterday evening.

Karunathilaka, a veteran Parliamentarian has previously served as Chief Opposition Whip in January 2020 as well while representing the United National Party (UNP). From 2015 to 2019, he held the position of Chief Government Whip in the UNP-led Good Governance administration.

During the same period, Karunathilaka served as Mass Media Minister and acted as the Cabinet Media Spokesperson. During his political career lasting 24 years he has also held other notable roles, including Lands and Parliamentary Affairs Cabinet Minister.
