The Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday lifted the overseas travel ban imposed on MP Namal Rajapaksa and several others when the case relating to the attack on GotaGoGama on 9 May 2022 was taken up before the court.

The courts lifted the overseas travel ban considering the facts presented by the counsels representing the MP and others, who were not named as suspects in the case. Meanwhile, the court also ordered the case in which former minister Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake were named suspects to be recalled on 19 July.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court that a petition has been filed before the Court of Appeal, challenging the instructions provided by the Attorney General regarding the suspects of this case.

The officials representing the CID noted that the verdict of the Court of Appeal is expected to be delivered on 23 June and thus requested the Magistrate to recall the Magisterial inquiry on a date following the judgement.  Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered the case to be taken up on 19 July.

Meanwhile on Tuesday MP Johnston Fernando was appointed to the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
