The Cabinet of Ministers has approved paying the basic salary of public sector employees, who are running for the Local Government election during the period from 9 March to 25 April 2023.
At least 3,000 public servants, who handed over nominations for the election, are currently on unpaid leave, the Government Information Department revealed.
However, as the LG election was repeatedly postponed, the Government employees contesting the LG polls are struggling financially as their unpaid leave was extended.
Hence, it has been decided by the Government that these State employees be paid their basic salaries from 9 March to 25 April 2023.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in his capacity as the Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
Earlier this week, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said salaries of all public employees for this month will be paid before 10 April.
