Govt. attempting to pass domestic debt restructuring proposal over weekend: G.L. 

• Claims restructuring domestic debt would negatively affect day-to-day lives of people
• Accuses Govt. of using various tactics to pass legislations that are harmful to the country
• Says Opposition vehemently opposes the proposal and will vote against it

Freedom People’s Congress (FPC) member Prof. G.L. Peiris yesterday claimed that the upcoming parliamentary session on Sunday is intended to focus on passing the proposal related to domestic debt restructuring.

Peiris warned restructuring domestic debt would negatively affect the day-to-day lives of the people and called it a secret attempt to paralyse the country, the banking system and the stock market. “They are attempting to use this time during which the country will be distracted to wreak havoc,” he claimed.

“The process of domestic debt restructuring has a direct impact on the daily lives of individuals. It is anticipated that the challenges faced by the people will multiply significantly. The citizens of our nation possess the absolute right to be informed about it and participate in meaningful discussions regarding the matter. We are vehemently opposing this in Parliament and will vote against it,” he said.

Peiris accused the Government of using various tactics to pass legislation harmful to the country. The MP made these comments while addressing the media at the party’s head office in Nawala yesterday.

Peiris said the Opposition intends to rally together to commence an awareness campaign to educate the public about the anti-people and oppressive actions of the Government. “The Ministers, MPs, and government officials are deceiving the people through their deceptive rhetoric,” he claimed.

The MP said the statements made by the Governor of the Central Bank are ‘nominal’. He also maintained that the IMF had not proposed the Government restructure domestic debt and it was instead proposed by the Sri Lankan Government.

“Under a government headed by us we will reconsider harmful proposals presented by the IMF,” he said. Peiris also claimed the new Aswesuma program initiated by the Government was without any transparency.
