A joint operation by Sri Lanka Police and Tri-forces is underway to apprehend ‘organised groups’ attempting to incite violence and cause inconvenience to the public.

“Over the past couple of weeks, we have observed that organised groups are staging unnecessary demonstrations, noting they are affected by shortage at fuel stations and blocking roads. Going forward we will apprehend such people whose intentions are to provoke and cause inconvenience to the public,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

He said there is sufficient evidence to prove that these are the same groups attempting to provoke people who are already frustrated at queues.

“We have continuously observed organised groups attempting to disrupt the distribution of fuel. We urge the public to be vigilant too at queues and inform security officials on the location of suspicious persons,” Wijesekara said.

The Minister also said the IGP has informed that operations to apprehend such individuals are currently underway based on videos and information obtained by Police Intelligence officers, adding suspects will be produced before Court.
