  • Claims Govt. is in its final phase before being ousted next year
  • Says public opposition against Govt. continues to escalate daily
  • Stresses importance of allowing people to select their preferred leaders
  • Urges Govt. to not infringe upon these rights of people

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Gayantha Karunathilaka yesterday claimed the current Government led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe is now in the final phase of its term before being ousted next year.

“They are staging their final act. They only have ten months to go,” he said. “The Government’s castle in the sky is on the verge of collapsing as public opposition to the government continues to escalate daily,” he added.

The MP made these comments while addressing a press conference at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo.

Karunathilaka further highlighted that the Government’s attempt to amend the electoral system, especially when multiple elections are constitutionally scheduled, raises concerns.

He pointed out the President’s announcement at the United National Party (UNP) convention that the presidential election will take place next year, alongside the commissioning of a committee to revise election laws, reflects a double standard on the part of the President.

“Today, the people are grappling with an unprecedented crisis, unlike anything in history. Their sources of income have been severely restricted, and the cost of living has reached an unbearable level. Water, electricity, fuel, bus fares, train fares, and children’s education expenses have all seen immeasurable increases,” he noted.

Karunathilaka emphasised the importance of allowing the people to exercise their right to select their preferred leaders and form a government of their choice. He urged the government not to infringe upon these rights and to uphold the principles of democracy.
