The Government has decided to proceed with the formulation of a new Bill aimed at enforcing pertinent legal provisions to establish a new university named Sri Lanka University of Education.
The move is expected to upgrade 19 out of the 20 existing National Colleges of Education to university campuses setting the stage for the elevation of them to the esteemed status of a university faculty. This visionary initiative, guided by an expert committee led by Professor Gunapala Nanayakkara, aligns with a prior Cabinet decision dated 4 December 2019.
“The committee, which boasts a wealth of expertise and experience, has been entrusted with the task of formulating recommendations about the administrative and legal protocols necessary for the upgrade. Their meticulous efforts are directed at ensuring the entire teaching community of Sri Lanka attains graduate status, thereby raising the overall academic calibre,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
He said the decision will infuse a fresh impetus into the higher education system, paving the way for a more enriched and qualified teaching force. “This forthcoming university is anticipated to emerge as a beacon of educational excellence, equipping future educators with the requisite knowledge and skills to shape the nation’s academic landscape,” he added.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Education Minister Susil Premajayantha was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
