The Ministry of Justice said steps have been taken to release 173 prison inmates in lieu of Poson Poya which falls tomorrow.
The release of inmates was recommended by Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
Those imprisoned due to the failure to pay fines will have all payables due waived off under the State pardon.
The highest number of 23 inmates will be released from Welikada Prison.
