Govt. workers warned against expressing opinions on social media in violation of establishment code 

In a letter to heads of state institutions, the Ministry of Public Administration has warned state sector employees against expressing opinions on social media in violation of the establishment code. 

The communique issued by Ministry of Public Administration Secretary M.M.P.K Mayadunne, yesterday noted that expressing one’s opinions in violation of the code could lead to disciplinary action being initiated against the said state sector employee.

“Expressing opinions on social media by a public officer without following the provisions of s.6 and s.7, chapter XLVII of the establishment code shall constitute an offence that leads to taking disciplinary action as stipulated in s.3 of Public Administration Circular No. 04/2015,” it said. 

Mayadunne also noted that carrying out an activity that should not be carried out by an officer who is not entitled to the exercise of political rights according to the establishment code through social media will also constitute an offence that will lead to disciplinary action. He also reminded the heads of departments and institutions that disciplinary action should therefore be taken against such officers.
