Guidelines for public and work-related activities issued for March

Revised guidelines have been issued for public and work-related activities and these will be effective until 31 March.

There is some relaxation of COVID-19 preventive measures, although health officials strongly advocate for continued DReAM practices (distancing, respiratory etiquette, aseptic techniques, and wearing of masks in public).

According to the circular issued by Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena, unnecessary travel is discouraged in order to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission. However, official, corporate, and professional events and meetings can be held with adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures.

A 75% venue capacity limit applies to weddings, which must be held as per safety guidelines. Funerals must also be conducted with adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures.

Exhibitions and conventions are permitted with adherence to safety guidelines, with the capacity limit being 75%. The maximum number of persons allowed at the venue must be displayed.

Indoor and in-house private gatherings can take place at 75% capacity of the venue with adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines. No capacity limit is mentioned for indoor and outdoor dining at restaurants, which must also adhere to COVID-19 preventive measures.

Industries are permitted to operate under safety guidelines.

Economic centres can remain open for wholesale trade and weekly markets, open markets and mobile vendors can operate. Both categories must function under strict supervision of local authorities and the area MOH.

Shops, grocery stores, pharmacies and supermarkets as well as financial institutions can remain open with adherence to safety guidelines. Barbers, salons and tailors can only accept clients on an appointment basis.

The reopening of schools is decided by the Education Ministry, while the University Grants Commission will make decisions regarding higher education centres, including universities. Day-care centres, preschools and vocational training institutes can operate under adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Physical attendance at examinations is permitted with adherence to health guidelines and tuition classes can be conducted according to COVID-19 preventive measures.

Cinemas, theatres, and gyms can open with adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines and sports activities are allowed as long as COVID-19 preventive measures are adhered to.

Courts can function under guidelines issued by the Judicial Services Commission.

Special festivals and occasions at places of worship must be held as per the guidelines issued by the Health Ministry.
