Gully bowser distribution by City Planning and Water Supply Ministry under World Bank assistance

City Planning and Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem said that his Ministry has launched a program of establishing waste water and solid waste disposal networks in selected areas, with assistance from the World Bank, in order to provide safe drinking facilities for the people, improve healthcare facilities, and prevent pollution of underground water.

This was disclosed by City Planning and Water Supply Minister and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem at a function held to distribute waste water and solid waste disposal (gully) bowsers valued at Rs. 40 million.

Minister Hakeem distributed 04 gully bowsers for use in the Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Moneragala and Nuwara Eliya district areas.  These gully bowsers were distributed to the Local Government institutions of Mullaitivu Pradeshiya Sabha, Karachchi Pradeshiya Sabha, Moneragala Pradeshiya Sabha and Talawakelle Urban Councils.

Under the City Planning and Water Supply Ministry special projects of pure drinking water supply and improvement of health care facilities, seven sewage treatment plant establishment projects are now ongoing. By proper management of waste water and solid waste treatment, it becomes possible to keep the underground water in a pure state, and to improve the health facilities of the people in the respective areas.

Minister Hakeem, responding to questions raised by media personnel, said that after the receding of flood water, the Water Supply and Drainage Department task force under his Ministry will take appropriate action to clean up the water supply in the affected areas and restore the supply of pure drinking water.
