The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) said yesterday that charging persons exercising fundamental rights under emergency law and not the regular law of the country undermines the rule of law.

“There is no justification to charge those arrested to be produced under emergency law, it added noting that there is a general law in the country which is enforceable to deal with these situations,” HRCSL said in a statement.

It directed the IGP to produce them under the general law of the country and refrain from the unjustifiable use of emergency law and surpass the general law of the country.

“Do not use emergency law and surpass the general law of the country when producing suspects arrested today at Galle Face vicinity,” HRCSL informed the IGP.
