Handunnetti, Alagiyawanna re-appointed to chair COPE, COPA

• Both served as chairmen of committees prior to Parliament prorogation in Dec.

Chairmen of two important oversight committees were reappointed yesterday, with JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti being reappointed as Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and MP Lasantha Alagiyawanna being reappointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA).

Handunnetti’s name was proposed by MP Ajith P. Perera and seconded by MP Ashok Abeysinghe.

Ministers Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and MPs Ajith P. Perera, D.V. Chanaka, Ashok Abeysinghe and Dr. Harsha de Silva were present at yesterday’s committee meeting.

Meanwhile Alagiyawanna’s name was proposed by MP Udaya Prabhath Gammanpila and seconded by MP Chandima Weerakkody.

Ministers Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi and Duminda Dissanayake and MPs Chandima Weerakkody, Udaya Prabhath Gammanpila, Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana, (Dr.) Nalinda Jayathissa and Wijepala Hettiarachchi were present at yesterday’s committee meeting. Both Handunnetti and Alagiyawanna were chairmen of the respective committees before the prorogation of Parliament on 2 December 2019.
