In parallel to International Women’s Day 2025, the High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom hosted a panel discussion on ‘The Role of Women in Shaping Economies.’ The event brought together distinguished professionals and community leaders to highlight the contributions of Sri Lankan women across industries and generations while championing gender equality and empowerment.

The program commenced with a special video message from the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to advancing gender equity. The Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in London, in her address, underscored the significant contributions of Sri Lankan women in shaping both economic and social landscapes, emphasising the need for continued support and recognition of their efforts.

Moderated by solicitor and media anchor Rohan De Alwis, the panel featured five accomplished Sri Lankan female professionals and entrepreneurs in the UK: Meta Defence Labs Ltd. Managing Director Chani Simms; Luminii Consulting Founder and CEO Lushani Kodituwakku; Oxford Vaccine Group Senior Clinical Researcher Professor Maheshi Ramasamy; Windsor Montessori School Founder and Head Menik Ellawala; Rolls-Royce Head of Digital, and Ivy Tech Founder Nipuni Karunaratne.

The discussion explored themes of leadership and driving change, innovation and technology, as well as education and empowerment. The panellists shared insights into overcoming gender barriers, the role of mentorship, and the importance of fostering adaptable support systems for women’s success. They also reflected on how Sri Lankan values have shaped their professional journeys in the UK and examined cultural differences in professional navigation between Sri Lanka and UK economies.
