ICT Lawyers Guild to help more efficient cyber law enforcement

ICT Lawyers Guild (ICTLG) Chairman, Dr. Sunil Abeyratne addressing the third Annual General Meeting last week in Colombo said the organisation will help a more efficient cyber law enforcement in Sri Lanka.

“The reason to form this guild is mainly to give a supportive role to the legal community, including the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. We formed this guild to upgrade the knowledge of our members first. Secondly, we share our knowledge with the legal community and the general public. Thirdly our objective is to provide in future legal aid to the people in this country,” Dr. Abeyratne said.

“We will conduct countrywide training programs for all lawyers, especially not only IT law, even to develop IT skills as well. We wish to interact with official and unofficial bar and the judiciary as well. We will also interact with the Police Department and Digital Economy Ministry and to give our input for the development of the digital economy in Sri Lanka.” The Chief Guest at the AGM, the Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Parinda Ranasinghe PC (Jnr.) said: “The Police Department now has its own cyber-crimes unit. As more transactions are now taking place online, the number of crimes committed online has also increased. Therefore, the ICT Guild members being equipped with knowledge, which is required to face the challenge is vital. The guild also aims to nurture the proficiency in future scientific and technology so that lawyers will be able to meet the country’s needs to act in the public interest and to contribute to enforcing the law in the ICT field as well.”
