The Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) led by its newly appointed convenor Madhushan Chandrajith will hold a massive protest march in Colombo today citing several demands from the Government.
The IUSF will take to the streets to demand an increase of the monthly Mahapola scholarship, the release of student activists Kelum Muddannayake and Dilshan Harshana, reduce the cost of living and the abolishment of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. The university students will also call on the Government to discard the newly proposed Prevention of Terrorism Act and to provide university students with the necessary facilities to continue their education.
The students are expected to voice their opposition to the establishment of private universities in Sri Lanka and the appointment of Sujeewa Amarasena as the new Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna.
Meanwhile, the National People’s Power (NPP) party will also hold a protest on 8 June. Party members and its Local Government candidates will gather before the Election Commission of Sri Lanka on the day to oppose the delay of elections and demand the Government hold polls as scheduled. The protest will be followed by a series of protests in Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Gampaha and Colombo, the party said.
