Increased bus fares come into effect today 

The National Transport Commission (NTC)-approved revised bus fares will come into effect today.

Accordingly, the minimum bus fare, which was at Rs. 14, will now be increased to Rs. 17, whilst the other category prices would be up by 17% with the minimum being Rs. 20.

On 29 December 2021, the decision on increasing the bus fares was taken following a discussion at the Transport Ministry. 

All Island Private Bus Owners Association General Secretary Anjana Priyanjan urged from all stakeholders to provide the change for tickets issued, insisting that every additional rupee adds to the cost-of-living burden on the general public.
