Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday assured that the Attorney General’s Department will not be abolished with the establishment of the Independent Prosecutor’s Office.

“The Independent Prosecutor’s Office will coexist with the AG’s Department. It will not replace it,” he said at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing.

Dr. Jayatissa clarified that the new institution aims to enhance efficiency in the administration of justice rather than replace the Attorney General’s Department.

He stated that the Attorney General, officials from the AG’s Department, and representatives from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will be part of the new entity, ensuring continuity and expertise in legal proceedings. The Cabinet Spokesman said the proposed institution is expected to streamline prosecutorial functions, reduce delays, and improve accountability within the justice system.
