India celebrates 72nd Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai held its National Event commemorating the 72nd Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on 4 February.

The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka V. Krishnamoorthy, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and observance of two minutes silence remembering those who sacrifices their lives for our nation.

The Independence Day message from the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka was read in Sinhala, Tamil and English followed by the speech, from the Deputy High Commissioner in which he quoted the manifesto of the President. In the speech the Deputy High Commissioner highlighted the cordial relations between Sri Lanka and India and the opportunities for further cooperation in the field of trade and technology.

The event was concluded with a colourful performance of the Channa-Upuli dancing troupe performing Sri Lankan traditional dances.  

The Mission also held an evening reception for diplomats, Indian Government officers and the Indian business community. The Deputy High Commissioner while addressing the gathering spoke about the investment opportunities in Sri Lanka and the growing tourism industry. He urged the business community to invest in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan traditional dances were performed at the event and a tea counter was set up that served the renowned Sri Lankan Tea to all dignitaries.

A Heel Danaya was also organised on 3 February commemorating the Independence Day and beseeching blessings on our country which was attended by Buddhist prelates.
