The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday handed a No-Confidence Motion to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya against the Government, highlighting the security breach and the devastation of the Easter Sunday Attacks.
According to the motion, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) finds the Government responsible for having failed to take timely action against those who had contact with terrorists, having failed to take action against the extremist activities growing in the county based on the information received, and having failed to arrest two suicide bombers who were under warrant that died in Sainthamaruthu military operation and during the Easter Sunday Attack.
The motion also cites the lagging status of the investigations over the attack on Buddha statues in Mawanella, inability to uncover the attack in advance, failing to deliver the responsibility by not taking part in the National Security Council meetings, failing to act upon the personal details of terrorists received from foreign intelligence services, members of the Government passing the blame of the Easter Sunday attack to one another, and intervention in the Mawanella investigation. The JVP also faulted the Government for failing to prevent the attack on the Muslim community and their properties in the North Western province and elsewhere.
During a media conference held in the Parliament complex, JVP leader Anura Dissanayake proposed an urgent change of government by passing the No-Confidence Motion, or if not possible, at the next General Election.
“Some charge us for supporting the Unity Government. Those who ran behind Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Maithripala Sirisena to cover their own corruption are now pointing fingers at us. We reject these charges. The Government is fully responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks. We don’t support the Government, and the time has come to change it either by passing the No-Confidence Motion in the Parliament, or by a General Election. We are confident in taking this No-Confidence Motion for debate in the coming week in Parliament. The No-Confidence Motion against Minister Rishad Bathiudeen will have no impact on our motion,” said lawmaker Dissanayake.
Drawing the attention to the previous No-Confidence Motions moved in Parliament, MP Dissanayake said: “JVP supported the No-Confidence Motions the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance brought. We supported these for public interest considerations, despite the high levels of corruption within the UPFA. We will not safeguard the criminals.”
“We will stand against the corrupt during the No-Confidence Motion debate against Minister Bathiudeen. The President is the key person responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks. To move a motion to impeach the President, we lack the minimum 75 signatures required,” he added. (AH)
