Jeyakumar appointed to Police Commission

President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Gananathan Jeyakumar to the National Police Commission for three years.

Jeyakumar completed his schooling at St John’s College, Jaffna and entered the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo in October 1967 and graduated with a Degree in Law in 1971. He thereafter entered the Sri Lanka Law College and took oaths as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in December 1971.

He was a Junior in the chambers of A.C. De Zoysa, President’s Counsel, from January 1974 till May 1975. In May 1875, he joined the Attorney General’s Department as State Counsel. He served in all part of the country, prosecuting in the various High Courts and was promoted as Senior State Counsel in September 1983.

He reverted to the unofficial Bar in January 1984 and remains in active practice to date. He has an extensive practice, both before the original and appellate Courts, in Colombo and in the outstations, in varying the fields, including Criminal Law, Land Law, Labour Law, Fundamental Rights and Public/Administrative Law. He was appointed as an acting member of the Public Service Commission and the Education Service Commission of the Public Service Commission from October 1984 to October 1985.

In June 1990, he was once again appointed to the Public Service Commission and served in that capacity till January 1995. He is currently a member of the Panel of Lawyers for the Bank of Ceylon and the Hatton National Bank PLC.
