Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya issuing a statement this week said the citizens of the country have an inherent right to discover the truth surrounding the disclosures presented in the Channel 4 documentary concerning the 2019 Easter Sunday attack.

Jayasuriya therefore, urged the Government to initiate a credible investigation into the revelations brought to light in the documentary.

“We also stress the importance of seeking expert support at both, national and international levels for this investigation,” he said.

“The information disclosed in the Channel 4 program concerning the Easter attack should not be dismissed without a formal investigation. Hence, it is imperative to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matters raised by the program and take suitable action against those accountable,” he added.  The former Speaker said failing to do so will have a negative impact on the country’s future and harm its communal harmony. “It will also hurt the image of the country on the international stage,” he noted.  Commenting on the Government’s promise to probe the information revealed, Jayasuriya said, it is essential to involve a specialised team with expertise and experience in criminal investigations, and the investigation team should be empowered to take legal action against any individual found responsible, depending on the progress of the investigations.

He also urged the Government to initiate an inquiry into politicians who actively contributed to the incitement of hatred against the Muslim community in Sri Lanka and advocated violence against them in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attack.
