Kaushalya Nawaratne re-elected uncontested as BASL President

Kaushalya Nawaratne PC was re-elected as President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) yesterday, while Attorney-at-Law Chathura Galhena was elected as Secretary for 2024/2025. 

Nawaratne was first elected as the BASL President unanimously by its membership on 11 January 2023. He was inducted as the 27th President of the BASL at the 49th Annual Convocation of the association in March 2023. 

At the closing of the call for nomination for the prestigious post yesterday, Nawaratne was the only submission made to the Returning Officer, Solicitor General Indika Demuni de Silva PC at the BASL auditorium. 

Nawaratne PC submitted his nomination papers for the post of President while Chathura Galhena submitted his nomination papers for the post of Secretary. There were no other nominations submitted thus allowing Nawaratne to be re-elected to the post. 

Nawaratne’s name was proposed and seconded by many senior counsels including Dr. K. Kanag Isvaran PC, Dr. Faiz Musthapha PC, Dr. Romesh De Silva PC, Ikram Mohamed PC, Kalinga Indatissa PC, Kushan De Alwis PC, Anil Silva PC, Sanjeewa Jayawardena PC, Nalinda Indatissa PC, Chandaka Jayasundera PC, Jagath Wickramanayake PC and Farman Cassim PC. The BASL will commemorate its 50th anniversary this year under Nawratne’s tenure.
