Cabinet Co-Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday that the apparent reaction by some to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s address to the nation is nothing unique.

He told journalists yesterday that even during similar past exercises by Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and President J.R. Jayewardene, there were critics.

“Any negative response is natural and expected. This has happened in the past, hence not unique. We will respond to criticism if needed. I am sure next week these issues will be raised in Parliament and we, as a Government, are ready to respond,” Rambukwella added.

Friday’s pre-recorded address to the nation by President Rajapaksa dominated social media banter with some expressing disappointment with the length, content, the format and the setting, whilst others praised him for being frank and forthright amidst challenges. They also said that President Gotabaya proved he nor the Government is a failure.
