Political and social activist Kelum Jayasumana has been arrested by the Computer Crime Investigation Division under S. 120 of the Penal Code. Jayasumana is accused of sharing old video content of Maaveerar Naal celebrations from previous years on social media, falsely claiming they were from this year which had the potential to incite public unrest. The court has remanded Jayasumana until 4 December.
Jayasumana had also contested in the recently concluded Parliamentary Elections, representing the National Democratic Front (NDF) from the Kurunegala District.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has apprehended three persons accused of promoting LTTE Heroes’ Day celebrations. The suspects, aged 28, 35, and 45, are residents of Maradana, Chunnakam, and Baddegama, respectively.
According to the police, the suspects shared photographs and videos of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the banned LTTE organisation, on Facebook. They also circulated old videos of LTTE Maaveerar Naal celebrations, falsely presenting them as events held this year.
The suspects have been charged under Section 120 of the Penal Code and Section 27 of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 48 of 1979. They face allegations of inciting public unrest, attempting to provoke opposition, and disseminating false advertisements promoting a banned organisation.
The Criminal Investigation Department and the Terrorism Investigation Division are conducting further inquiries into the incident.
